Our society has become obsessed with consupmtion. The majority of the Western population are driven by apirations of owning the latest technology, cars, toys, gadgets, new clothes, footwear - a drive to have more and to consume more. Success is measured by how much more they can consume than the less successful.
Our governments encourage this consumption because it drives their economies. The more we consume, the more trade that takes places. The sustainability of producing, using and then discarding all this 'stuff' is not a consideration.
Miillions of tonnes of waste is piled into landfill sites each year - much of which will take hundreds of years to decay. Re-cycling is on the increase, which is a positive sign but isn't the best way to reduce waste simply to reduce consumption?
